Australian singer and actress Olivia Newton-John, who rose to the top of the global pop charts in the 1970s and 1980s, died Monday at the age of 73 in her Southern California home.

In a statement posted on social media, her husband said Olivia Newton-John died peacefully on her ranch in Southern California this morning among her family and friends, after a 30-year battle with breast cancer, according to AFP.

Twenty-five years ago, Newton-John underwent a partial mastectomy and set up a cancer research facility in Australia.

Olivia Newton-John began her artistic career in childhood and became an international star after moving to the United States.

Newton-John is best known as the heroine of the famous 1978 musical "Grease", one of the most successful musical films in Hollywood history, in which she and John Travolta performed their famous song You're the One I Want, You're Who I Want. It became one of the best-selling songs in the world.
