Russian President Vladimir Putin has revived a Soviet-era project known as the "Hero Mother", as the country's demographic crisis worsened due to low birth rates.

Putin signed a presidential decree that brought back to the destination the "Hero Mother" project, which was launched by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin in 1944, during World War II, when the country suffered great human losses.

This project continued in the Soviet Union until its collapse in 1991, and then stopped, according to the Russian English-language newspaper "Moscow Times".

The Russian presidential decree is similar to the previous Soviet project, as it will grant the title of "heroic mother" to anyone who gives birth and takes care of 10 or more children.

A woman who meets the conditions will receive 1 million rubles ($16,000) once her tenth child reaches the age of one.

Women who lose their children as a result of a battle, a terrorist act, or an emergency can also get this money.

The mothers who received this title enjoy the same status as the Russian champions in other areas, such as work.

Last June, Putin said that large families are witnessing a gradual recovery in Russian society, when he announced his intention to revive the "Hero Mother" project during the country's Children's Day.

Putin called for "major measures" to confront the demographic crisis in Russia.

According to the "Moscow Times" newspaper, the population of Russia has been in an almost continuous state of decline for decades, declining to 145 million in early 2022, after the country lost 400,000 people.
