Putin signs law providing prison terms for spreading false news about the military

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law stipulating prison terms of up to 15 years for spreading false news about the Russian military, as Moscow pursues its invasion of Ukraine.

Putin also signed a bill imposing fines or imprisonment to demand sanctions against Russia, while Moscow faces unprecedented economic sanctions from Western capitals over the invasion.

On Friday, Russia approved the principle of imposing severe penal sanctions in the event of dissemination of false information about the army, in the last step that reflects Moscow's hardening at home in conjunction with the invasion of Ukraine.

On Friday, the Russian deputies (Duma) adopted a text that includes prison sentences and heavy fines for anyone who publishes false information  about the army.

This amendment provides for various penalties of imprisonment of up to 15 years if  false information leads to serious consequences for the armed forces.

A separate amendment approved on Friday also provides for the punishment of those calling for sanctions against Russia, which faces harsh Western retaliation for its invasion of Ukraine.

In order to control the narrative they are giving about the conflict to the Russian people, the authorities have ramped up pressure on the few independent media outlets that have been able to operate in recent years despite the hostile climate.

The media regulator (Roskomnadzor) announced Friday that it had imposed restrictions on access to four independent media, including the Russian version of the BBC at the request of the prosecutor.

The Media Regulatory Authority said that access to the websites of the BBC's Russian language service Deutsche Welle Medusa  and  Radio Svoboda the Russian branch of Radio Free Europe has become limited .
