Lassa fever virus .. Britain records the first cases of this virus

The British Health Security Agency announced that two people in England had been diagnosed with Lassa fever virus, noting that a third possible case was under examination.

According to the British newspaper, “The Guardian”, this is the first time that cases of the deadly infectious disease, caused by the Lassa virus, have been identified in the United Kingdom for more than a decade.

One of the two confirmed cases has recovered, while the second is still receiving specialist care at the Royal Free London Hospital.

Britain's Health Security Agency said the third "probable" case was being treated at Bedfordshire Hospital.

The agency indicated that the three cases are from the same family, and that the reason for the outbreak of the virus was the travel of the infected to West Africa.

Lassa fever virus is an acute viral hemorrhagic disease. People usually get it through exposure to food or household items contaminated with the urine or feces of infected mice.

People who live in areas of West Africa with large rodent populations and where the disease is endemic are most susceptible to Lassa fever.

Many people with Lassa fever recover completely. However, in some individuals, the disease can develop severely and sometimes lead to death.

Symptoms are usually gradual, beginning with fever, general weakness, and malaise. After a few days there may be headache, sore throat, muscle aches, chest pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cough and abdominal pain, according to the World Health Organization.

In severe cases, there may be swelling of the face, fluid in the lung cavity, bleeding from the mouth, nose, vagina or gastrointestinal tract and a drop in blood pressure.

Deafness affects 25% of recovering patients. In half of these cases, hearing partially returns after one to three months.
