Germany announces the allocation of 100 billion euros to its armed forces

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Sunday that Germany will allocate 100 billion euros to a fund for its armed forces, raising its defense spending to more than 2 percent of gross domestic product.

It is clear that we need to invest significantly in the security of our country, in order to protect our freedom and our democracy  Schulz said at a special session of the Bundestag in Berlin on Sunday morning.

The move marks a milestone for Germany, which has been criticized by the United States and other NATO allies for not investing enough in its defense budget.

Schulz's announcement, made during a special session of the German Bundestag on Sunday morning, was the latest in a series of major shifts in German defense and security policy this weekend in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

On Saturday evening, the German government announced that it will send weapons and other supplies directly to Ukraine, which is fighting to prevent Russia from invading its capital.
