More than 50,000 Ukrainians have fled their country in less than 48 hours since the start of the Russian invasion, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees confirmed on Friday, while the European Union announced that it would impose severe sanctions  on President Vladimir Putin and his Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

With the start of the Russian invasion at dawn on Thursday, the roads were narrowed with thousands of Ukrainians arriving at the European Union borders in Moldova and Poland, as well as in Hungary and Romania.


 More than fifty thousand Ukrainian refugees fled their country in less than 48 hours, most of them towards Poland and Moldova, and many others are heading to the borders Filippo Grandi wrote on Twitter. 


Grandi thanked Moldavian President Maya Sandu for allowing those who fled Ukraine to cross the border with Moldova safely assuring her that the UNHCR  will do everything in its power to help mobilize international assistance while you receive  the Ukrainians.


While Ukrainian forces are battling elements of the Russian army in the capital, Kiev, German Foreign Minister Annalena Barbuk confirmed Friday in Brussels that the European Union will  impose severe sanctions  on the Russian president and his foreign minister.


 The important thing today is that the EU will severely punish Putin and Lavrov who are responsible for this situation she said upon her arrival to attend a meeting of foreign ministers of the 27 countries to agree on a package of sanctions announced on Thursday.


 On the orders of President Putin, people have been dying in Ukraine for two days  she added We are hitting the Putin regime where it should be hit, not only economically and financially, but also at the core of his power  she said.


European Union Foreign Minister Josep Borrell commented The German minister announced this. This means that Germany has agreed to punish the Russian president and his foreign minister. 


He explained This proposal was discussed during the European summit on Thursday, but there was no clear consensus. 


 We were asked to find a solution and I hope we found it he added Personally, I strongly support this measure  the European official said.


Josep Borrell pointed to the need to adopt the sanctions unanimously Unless it comes as a surprise, Putin and Lavrov will be on the EU's list of sanctioned individuals he said.
